Kirk Christiansen was a carpenter who made wooden toys. But his business didn’t go well. He didn’t make much money. There were even times that Christiansen had to trade his toys for food. His son started working for him later in life, but they both struggled through the early 1930s.
In 1934, Christiansen named his company “Lego”. In 1947, he bought a plastic modeling machine. In the same year, Christiansen got some plastic bricks from Kiddicraft, a British company. He decided to make his own plastic bricks! At first, Christiansen named his new toy the “Automatic Binding Bricks”. The Lego company renamed the toy in 1953 to “Lego
Bricks”. The company still struggled. Most people at this time liked
wooden toys and not plastic toys.
