Cause and Effect 2
The Bubonic Plague, also called the Black Death, killed more than 70 million people in the 1500s. The Black Death caused a high fever, bruises of the body and face, and spitting up blood. Since the disease was so bad, most people who got it died within five days.
People at the time believed the disease came from black rats, which were a type of very large rat that lived in the 1500s, but it now gone. They weren't 100% wrong. The disease didn't come from the rats but from the fleas that lived on the rats. The fleas bit the people and, since no one had good hygiene and they had very little medicine that could help, the people would get the disease easily.
